California is expensive. That’s not new information. I went to Beverly Hills over Spring Break to visit my friend and we ate out every day.
That is why I wanted to highlight my favorite restaurant, which I consider a total bang for your buck.
Lo and behold: The Hideaway. Hidden in Rodeo Collections, it is easy to miss, but you must stop by.
If you want to eat cheaply (fixed price of $28) and still leave full, you should go for lunch. During lunch they have the “Uno, dos, tres” menu which is a three course meal where you choose your starter, main, and dessert.
Walking in, you immediately know this is the place to be, because the restaurant is bustling. The entrance has small alcoves with colorful candles resting inside and a large green door which welcomes guest into the reception area.
At the tables, you are seated in a Mexican leather barrel chair next to walls decorated with movie posters and a button that says “Push for tequila.” You can tell the interior design has been carefully thought out.
*I must note that you should come looking cute, because there is no such thing as causal on Rodeo Drive.
The meal begins with complimentary homemade chips, salsa, bean dip, and guacamole. Honestly, this about had me sold on this place, because there is nothing I love more than free food.
The chips were homemade and crispy with a nice crunch. The guacamole came with salt and lemon which I recommend using as that adds flavor. These complimentary chips are easy to fill up on, so do save your appetite. TRUST me, I did munch on them.
To start my meal, I ordered the Corn Empanadas. These empanadas come baked, not fried, and were perfectly crimped.
They are served with a to-die-for banana habanero dipping sauce and stuffed to the brim with roasted corn, caramelized onions, roasted bell peppers, and cotija cheese. Usually, I do not like red bell peppers, but it paired nicely.
For the “Dos” section, I ordered Baja Fish Tacos. They were lightly battered and not overly greasy. I requested corn torti
llas and they arrived wrapped in a brown paper.
I did expect the tacos to be pre-packed, which was why I was surprised when I had to make them myself. It was hard to stuff everything in the tortilla, but it was nice to customize my food.
The fish was placed next to a mango slaw, chipotle aioli sauce, rice and beans. The beans were bland, but the rest of the dish served – literally and figuratively.
P.S. They don’t skimp on portions, which made me happy.
We finished with “Tres”, which was three churros served on a gorgeous ceramic plate alongside two tiny clay pitchers filled with dipping sauces and whipped cream. One vessel held dark Mexican chocolate and cinnamon sauce, and the other a delightful prickly pear strawberry sauce.
Honestly, they outdid themselves with the dessert as the chocolate was silky, smooth, and not too rich while the strawberry sauce was a perfect mix of sweetness and bitterness. The whipped cream was light and melted on my tongue.
Overall, if not yet obvious, this is an ode to The Hideaway because I have no complaints. Everything I tried here was DELICIOUS and well portioned.
For being Beverly Hills, it isn’t too pricey, and the staff members are hospitable and nice. I left feeling content and pleased with my experience.
