With the 2024-2025 school year just beginning, seniors must also begin making their college decisions. Before months of rigorous application processes, writing essay after essay and touring your top contenders, you have to consider what colleges you even want to attend. Assuming of course, you’ve decided what to do for the rest of your life. But what if you haven’t? Teenagers shouldn’t be expected to have their entire life figured out right out of high school.
Interests change, sometimes they haven’t even developed yet. So the question is, how do you choose a college without knowing what you want to major in?
The Lincoln graduate had an array of valuable advice, covering location, program overviews and study abroad programs.
“Definitely consider the place your college is in. If you anticipate leaving campus then you might want to know a bit about the city that it is in. Also, just the overall vibe of the campus.” She also recommended touring as many campuses as you can, saying “I knew I wanted an urban environment as opposed to rural, so seeing different campus layouts was important to me.”
She shared that it was important to consider if you want to study abroad, saying all of her top schools had extensive study abroad programs.
Finally I asked her if having an undecided major affected her application process at all, where she stated “No, personally I only applied to liberal arts schools so they all have a period where you have about two years before it’s required to commit to a major. However, larger universities sometimes require you to be admitted to a specific school like engineering, so if you really want to go to a big school you might have to consider a general path that you want to study.”
Although everyone’s college decision and application journey will be unique, we hope the seniors this year will find that this article held beneficial advice for their college decisions.
