Lincoln sports are lucky to have easy access to outstanding photographers Steele Shapiro (’25) and Wyatt Kaufman (’25). These two students have been capturing Lincoln’s athletes in their element for the past 2 school years.
Shapiro’s favorite sport to photograph is football. “It has the most drip to capture,” he says. Kaufman agrees, adding that, “The guys gave me lots of support. They helped me grow [as a photographer].” To catch the perfect shot, Shapiro says framing is the most important aspect. He says he likes to “try to get the receiver and QB in it together” because “when you can see their dynamic it turns out really cool.”
Both photographers enjoy being on the sidelines of the games taking pictures. Shapiro explains, “Being on the sidelines is so different, it feels like I’m a part of the team.” Kaufman elaborates saying, “The energy on the field is pretty intense. I feel like I’m on the team even though I’m not a player. I get to be a part of the game and capture exciting moments.”
“A lot of credit goes to Mr. Bubb and the film team,” Kaufman said, talking about his start in photography. “They’re super passionate people.” It was their undeniable passion that fueled his curiosity to learn more and better himself at photography.
With both Shapiro and Kaufman graduating this spring, who will be Lincoln’s new cameraman? Well, with Trevor Couzens’ (’27) new Christmas gift, a Sony AX 6000 600, mirrorless and all-digital, he might just fill the role!
“I have been interested in photography for the past couple years,” Trevor says. “I have most recently been focused on taking pictures of nature and landscapes.” He’s starting his journey with sports photography this winter, photographing his friends club basketball team as well as the Lincoln Boys Swim team. He says he can see a bright future for himself in photography.
Couzens believes he will do a good job taking on the role as Lincolns new sports photographer because after many years of soccer, 11 to be exact, he understands the angles and moments players like to capture in their photos. “I know what to look for to get a cool sports shot and I’m very particular with my soccer photos.”
Although Lincoln will be sad to see Shapiro and Kaufman go… don’t fear, Trevor is here!
