Our school population is increasing rapidly, causing the big change in Lincoln sports, moving from the 3A sports division to 4A. The number of A’s indicates how big the school is and who the teams will be playing in sports. 3A schools usually have at most 1300 students and Lincoln now has almost 1800 students.
Fall sports teams have wrapped up their season and these athletes have experienced playing some 4A teams. The Lincoln Football team played Skyline, a 4A team, during the playoffs and quarterback Jacob Smith noticed a big difference during the game. “They were faster and bigger than all the 3A teams we’re used to playing,” he said. The Lynx ended up losing their playoff game vs Skyline which ended their season.
Golf captain Nathan Race said, ” We got smacked in the playoffs when we faced all the 4A teams. It wasn’t even close.” The golf team still had a great season but needed to adjust to this big change.
Furthermore, the basketball team recently played their first playoff games against 4A Newport-Bellevue. The Lynx handled Newport pretty easy winning 75-41. Captain Hugo Henrikson said, “It was just any another game.” The Lynx played their next playoff game on Tuesday losing to Skyline in a close game, 55-60. Skyline has the Lynx’s number beating them in football and basketball, and ending both seasons for Lincoln.
Overall, Lincoln sports have a large obstacle to overcome and the competition that we have to face now is way better. Winter sports are going great, and early playoff games show some signs for hope. Hopefully, Lincoln sports teams will adjust to this change and flourish in the 4A division.
