On this year’s Groundhog’s Day, Punxsutawney Phil predicted another 6 weeks of winter. However, Lincoln is already abuzz with chatter about spring, and more specifically, Lincoln’s first Spring Fling.
While rumors had begun to circulate throughout school weeks ago, the Winter Assembly was the first time it was mentioned by members of ASB. As of Monday the 11th its official! Lincoln will be holding a Spring Fling TOLO on April 4th.
Jasper Horner-Devine (’25) pointed out that there’s a long period in spring where “nothing really happens,” and an additional dance will be a fun event to fill this gap. Paige Phillips (’26) also expressed positive feelings about the dance, saying it would be nice to have another all grades dance, especially because Lincoln doesn’t have a Junior Prom.
With only two general purpose dances on the calendar, in the past many Lynx have felt short-changed. “Last year was so boring… other schools had Spring Flings so why didn’t we?” questioned Evelyn Byrne (’27). Many Lincoln students shared a similar sentiment, and there has been some advocacy for the event within ASB over the years.
Though they faced some resistance from past administration, this year, admin was finally swayed, and ASB was able to start planning for the occasion.
As an emerging tradition at Lincoln, this year will set the precedent of the dance for years to come. So what will Spring Fling look like?
Yang Ni (’26) and Anaya Goldberg (’27) both agreed they thought spring fling should be more casual than Winter Formal, but more formal than Homecoming. “Definitely still put in effort,” Ni declared.
Their inclination that the event would be more casual than Formal proved to be correct, with ASB President Levi Hanscom (’25) confirming it would take place at Lincoln rather than an alternative venue. This could be a popular decision among those who were concerned about the price of Winter Formal tickets, as at-school dances tend to be more affordable.
Like other dances, we can expect another spirit week and assembly, though interestingly, the dance is going to take place on a Friday rather than a Saturday, like the rest of the dances on Lincoln’s calendar.
Before the theme was announced, Lynx tended to lean toward more seasonal ideas as themes. Some ideas were broad, with students mentioning pastels and ’sun’.
Others were in favor of hoe-down, though some felt this could lead to people going ‘too casual’ with attire. Chloe Haque (’26) suggested flowers, which was spot-on, as the chosen theme ended up being “Spring Flowers”!
It seems that whatever the theme, Lynx are excited at the idea of an additional dance, and can’t wait to see how ASB can set it apart from the rest. Ni mentioned, “It could be nice to have something where the girls ask the guys.”
This is not uncommon at other schools, with both Blanchet and Ingraham holding an annual TOLO. Also known as a Sadie-Hawkins dance, this could be a fun way for Lincoln to shake things up.
While some of Lincoln’s other events are typically organized by one grade (for example, Winter Formal is always planned by the Junior Class Council), Hanscom mentioned that Spring Fling is handled by the entirety of ASB. Hanscom and ASB Treasurer Jasmine Villet (’26) are the primary people in charge of the details, and are collaborating with Olivia Kane, newly elected ASB President for the 2025-26 school year.
Introducing Spring Fling could be a good opportunity for Lincoln to solidify another fun event in the school year and provide some more school engagement. With the hope of a dance in the spring, these last weeks of winter might go by just a little bit quicker for the Lynx.
