Summary
The Silent Patient is about a woman named Alicia Berenson who murders her husband and goes silent for the next 6 years. After the murder, she creates her last painting before being forced into a psychiatric hospital, called the Grove. There, she must participate in psychological therapy with a therapist named Theo. He is obsessed with getting her to talk about her motives. He has to look into her artwork and life to discover the secrets behind the silent patient.
Character Analysis
Alicia was a well-known painter. Trauma in her childhood influenced some of her work and led to her becoming silent. She is placed in The Grove for the murder of her husband.
Theo is a skilled psychotherapist. The book is told from his perspective. His obsessions start to become controlling and consume him. He becomes obsessed with Alicia’s inner secrets and motivations. Theo is married to a woman named Kathy, who is somehow connected to the murder.
Do I Recommend it?
I recommend this book if you are looking for a mystery thriller. It would be an excellent read for this month as it is a spooky season. The story dives into childhood trauma, buried anger, bottled-up emotions, and how this shaped the characters in the book. It keeps you engaged and wanting more. I couldn’t put this book down.
