World Cup Updates

The 2022 Men’s World Cup has been very action packed and exciting so far. The USA made their first appearance since 2014, but unfortunately were knocked out by the Netherlands in their game last Saturday, December 4th . Even though the Americans aren’t participating in the tournament anymore, it doesn’t mean that you should stop watching.

Saudi Arabian players Saleh Al-Shehri and Feras Al-Brikan Feras celebrate their first goal against Argentina.

There were several upsets in the group stage, including Saudi Arabia’s 2-1 victory over tournament-favorites Argentina. While Argentina only scored one goal, they had 3 that were called back due to offside. This was Saudi Arabia’s first ever victory against Argentina and was one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.

We also saw Japan upset Germany, the 2014 tournament winners. Japan got close to opening the scoring in the 8th minute, but had their goal called offside. Germany ended up getting on the scoreboard first, with a successful penalty in the 33rd minute. As the game appeared to be wrapping up, Japan came back with two skillful goals in the last 15 minutes of the game. Japan went on to win Group E.

Morocco had a shocking 2-0 victory over the #2 ranked Belgium squad. The teams had 10 shots apiece, but Belgium failed to convert. Morocco scored in the last few minutes of the first half, but the goal was offside. Morocco redeemed themselves in the second half, notching a goal in the 72nd minute, and one in the 92nd. Overall, it was a disappointing performance from Belgium.

Looking ahead at the rest of this week, we chose a few games that we think our readers should keep an eye on:

Croatia vs. Brazil (Friday, December 9th, 7 am PST)

Netherlands vs. Argentina (Friday, December 9th, 11 am PST)

England vs. France (Saturday, December 10th, 11 am PST)
