As tennis season gets into full swing, I pulled Olivia Kane (’26) for a chat to discuss her approach to prioritize her academic and athletic performance this spring. Here’s what she had to say!
“[I’m most excited for] the community that tennis brings. It’s really special and I look forward to competing and cheering my teammates on!” Olivia Kane (‘26).
Lincoln athletes have been prioritizing intentional play, even incorporating sports psychology sessions into some sports’ schedules. Kane says this season, she’s aiming to improve as a player, but that the team has set a specific goal of winning Metro League. As a student athlete, managing schoolwork, athletics, and often times a job can be overwhelming. When I asked her how she managed that load, Kane’s answer stood out to me, and it’s something all Lincoln athletes should take note of.
She told me the most important skill was prioritizing your needs. For her, that meant giving up social opportunities to study for a test, or making early mornings count towards getting work done.
This is what it really means to be a student-athlete at Lincoln. Whilst success within your sport is important, it’s what you do off the court that really matters. For Kane, this means working hard so she can succeed in her classes, being your ASB president, and setting herself up for success in her post-high school plans.
