At Lincoln high school, many student union clubs are made to unite people from different culturalbackgrounds together! LSU is the Latin Student union club at Lincoln where all Latinos from different placesgather to create a diverse and inclusive community.
It may not feel like a space for all students, but LSU is welcoming to every single student and staff regardless of their ethnicity and cultural background, even while the club is mostly made up of Hispanic people. At LSU they believe diversity is one of many key elements that makes a group of people a community.
Of course, all student unions are special in their own way, but what is most admirable about them is the interest they take in advocating and leaning towards taking action to solve issues presented in the world that affect their community.
During the challenging times happening with the new laws being enforced by President Trump’s administration and federal ICE agents, multiple communities have been affected by not just violence, but discrimination for being stereotypically similar to “Hispanic people”.
LSU and other Lincoln students have helped with making Whistle Kits, made for anyone to use to alert someone if there is an ICE agent nearby. Many Hispanics who come here for work and a better life in the US are still living in fear of being deported or worse, having their life taken away from misuse of power from ICE agents.
To get insight into the perspectives of the Latin club leaders, the Lincoln Log asked a few club leaders and members what it is like to be in a Latin student community, specifically how they’ve interacted in LSU’s community compared to the community outside of the club.
Jerechai Davison (’27) one of the club leaders expressed that “LSU has a strong support system from the Hispanic community especially advisors and other supporting staff.” He also emphasized that a main focus ofhis leadership is to “bring more cultural awareness inside and outside of the club.” For him this includesfocusing on people who may be oblivious to the Hispanic culture and have a lack of understanding aboutthings being done in the club for a specific cause.
Another club leader of LSU, Marcela Delucchi (’27), answered the question “What do you hope to bring to LSU as a club leader?” Delucchi said she “hopes to create a space where everyone feels that they are welcome.”She added, “as well as bringing knowledge to people that LSU is made up of so many countries not just Mexico as some assume, and everyone is equally welcomed just like any other Latino student.”
Latin student union is centered around Latinos, but it also shows how students, whether Latino or not, can help create a community that is more than just a club but also a space where people feel safe, heard, and support while struggles appear in the world.
“I think this is one of the spaces at Lincoln where I have felt included and welcomed, and I think all student unions really focus on creating spaces where anyone can go but also focusing on problems that those specific groups struggle with.” mused Allisson Avante (’26).
LSU is a union that focuses on speaking up and helping those in our community, and with the help of other students at Lincoln High School, they can achieve so much more!
