The days are shrinking, the rain is relentless; the warmth of summer is now a precious, fading memory. This cold shift in the atmosphere often weighs on us, draining our energy and leaving us feeling subdued. We are left searching for a new kind of warmth, something to replace that bright, familiar happiness.
Now that it’s colder and the sun is out of the picture, the weather becomes unpredictable. While some hope for snow, or rain, others are just hoping to get through the day.
According to AmericanFamily.com, “We feel sadder and less motivated during winter primarily due to a lack of sunlight, which disrupts our body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm), affecting the production of mood-regulating hormones like serotonin and sleep-inducing melatonin.”
Lincoln students, who have multiple due dates, college applications, and sports around this time have some opinions on this; Porter Good (‘26) says “Yeah, I do experience a lack motivation because its darker and colder.”
The weather plays a great role in our lives, and now that it’s colder, it doesn’t leave much for us to do. Siena Elmers (‘27) shares that “I can’t do a lot of activities outside, and I want to be outside.” Merrick Berger (‘28) shares feelings many students agree with, saying “It makes me feel tired quicker and I just want to sleep, but I look forward to the holidays and breaks!”
Since this seems to be a continuing trend at Lincoln, people are in need of some ways to stay cheerful. Most students like looking forward to the holidays; others spend their time outside even though it’s cold, some like to see the beauty of it all.
After interviewing Lincoln students, Piper McGinnis (‘26) and Theo Davis (‘26) recommend “hanging out with friends…going to local coffee shops and spending time at the Bellevue mall.” Elena Laigo (‘28) agrees, saying “the decorations are always so festive during this time.” These are some ways Lincoln students combat seasonal depression.
Everyone experiences a little sadness and faces minor challenges, especially with the way the weather can make us feel during the winter. Just remember that you’re not alone; we can all overcome these feelings and make this season a bit sweeter. Now is a perfect time to come together, create new memories, and support each other, no matter what the weather brings.
